On the Issues

California is now, without a doubt, one of the highest taxed states in the country. Small entrepreneurs, small businesses as well as larger corporations are relocating and leaving California in droves to tax friendlier states in competition with us for revenue. Californians are now paying nearly 9% on all taxable goods while families with children have seen their state tax credit reduced by nearly 70%. Not only is this an attack on businesses, but it’s also an attack on families and all hard working Californians. We must restore fiscal conservatism, cut taxes and provide tax credits to businesses to get California back on track and back on the road to economic recovery.

We are a nation of laws, and must therefore enforce our border policy by halting illegal immigration at its source; build an effective wall and perimeter along our entire border and hold businesses that hire illegal immigrants creating a pull factor, accountable. We must track down illegal alien gang members and other criminals on our streets and provide swift justice and deportation. A weakened and dangerous Mexico only furthers the plights of illegal immigrants into the United States. We must also support Mexico’s fight against drug cartels and work to eliminate factors that push our neighbors south of the border to cross over illegally.

As a community we must support our First Responders; police, fire and others who do an amazing job protecting our neighborhoods. Assemblyman Emmerson has an impeccable record that I intend to follow. Not only do I understand the issues that the Inland Empire deals with on a regular basis, but as a reserve Sheriff’s deputy I have witnessed firsthand the dangers that exist in our communities. Letting prisoners, hardened criminals out early is a risk we just can’t afford to take. I support preventative programs designed to show our youth that there is a better way of life should they choose responsibility over a life of crime. However, there are many that have already made their choice and must pay the penalty for their crimes. Let’s keep violent criminals behind bars where they belong, and while taxpayers are footing the bill, let’s put them to work in some fashion and get a decent return for our investment.

At 12 years old I found myself addicted to drugs and alcohol and without direction. While I’ve had articles written about my accomplishments and successes, the truth is I am one of the lucky ones. I overcame the obstacle of drugs and alcohol and worked hard to get ahead in life but there are many every day that never make it. The legalization of any drug will only serve to cause a sharp increase in these statistics. With meth use and home meth lab busts on the rise, can we risk endangering our youth by sending them mixed signals? This is a cultural war that we fight with the drug legalization movement and I have no desire to see the Inland Empire go the way of Amsterdam. We need to show our kids that the pleasure is not worth the pain they cause everyone around those that use them. Join me in preventing the sale and use of illegal drugs in our towns.

California, at one time was as a model state for education. Not anymore. We have a bloated educational bureaucracy that has continually fallen below the mark performing poorly at every level. This time the responsibility rests in our hands as a state and not the federal governments. Inadequate accountability standards for teachers and students as well as a general lack of educational leadership are to blame. We must face the future, or become history. Parents should be allowed vouchers to place their children in alternate schools of their choosing and charter schools must be embraced. A free market principle applied to schooling where teachers are held accountable and parents are actively involved in their children’s education is a solution. This has worked surprising well in Europe of all places. Aren’t you tired of Democrats putting Teachers Unions ahead of our children’s education for over 40 years? Let’s stop lowering the bar for students and start to raise it, our kids deserve it.

I am both a veteran and a patriot. I understand that this doesn’t normally fall under the jurisdiction of the legislature or an Assembly race but our nation’s founding values are important to me. I believe in God, family, duty, honor, respect and integrity. We must never forget that first and foremost, we are Americans and have a solemn obligation to protect our history and most importantly its accompanying principles. It is without hesitation that we should all look to find ways to take responsibility for our state and country and do what we must to preserve our heritage. Let’s do a better job of honoring our Nation on its very special holidays. Let’s do a better job of educating the youth, what it means to be an American. Lets demand that our elected officials stand by these core founding principles and lead with the conviction and purpose expected by those who paid the ultimate sacrifice to ensure our nation did not perish from this Earth.

In a relatively recent decision the Supreme Court overruled a hand gun ban that had been in place in Washington D.C. This decision explicitly interpreted the 2nd amendment as being meant to protect the rights of ordinary citizens to bear arms. This right is now under attack in a new form. Gun control advocates having lost this previous battle now seek to erode this liberty by reducing our ability to purchase ammo and by other creative trickery. This is especially the case in California. Our constitutional rights as law abiding U.S. citizens to protect our lives and property must not be denied, only awareness and action will prevent this new means of attacking our 2nd Amendment rights.
